Data Access

Through this page all the interested people can freely download the plots and maps (PDF format) which represent the main results of the INTENS project, along with data needed for reconstructing such maps. A thorough description of the results can be found here.

The use of such images in scientific publications or presentations at workshops and conferences, or for educational or outreach purposes shall be authorized by the project PI’s. Anyone interested in use such images or part of them shall preventively contact Dr. Paola De Michelis (paola.demichelis@ingv.it).

In any case, a proper acknowledgement to the INTENS team and to ESA is due whenever the images are used/published.

The Swarm data upon which all the INTENS work is based can be accessed and freely downloaded here.

1. Statistical maps of turbulence indices

In this section one can download the climatological maps of the turbulence indices: Hurst, β, and I (Intermittency), calculated from the Swarm A and B magnetic field external components (obtained after subtraction of the main field) parallel and perpendicular to the main field direction, and the electron density, for both high latitude Northern and Southern hemispheres, and mid-low latitudes.

A classification has been made as a function of geomagnetic activity (characterized by sectors of SYM-H and AE indices) and the orientation of the Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF).

Each map can correspond to the results for a given spacecraft (A or B), a given latitude sector (North, Mid-Low, South), a given variable (Bo1, Bo2, Bp, Ne) and a given classification (act = geomagnetic activity levels, IMF = IMF sectors). Therefore, for example, the file "INTENS_SwarmA_North_Bp_act.pdf" will contain 16 maps, grouped in four rows of four maps each, displaying the High Latitude distributions for Swarm A (polar maps showing quasi-dipole magnetic latitudes > 50°, and magnetic local times from 0 to 24) of: 1) the variable, in this case Bp (the magnetic external component parallel to the main field direction), 2) the Hurst index related to Bp, 3) the β index related to Bp, 4) the I index related to Bp. Each row of images characterizes a geomagnetic activity level, from quiet to severe, as detailed here.

It is also possibile to download, for each map, the numerical values of the variables represented in the map, in form of compressed (.ZIP) files. Each ZIP file contains 3 or 4 ASCII files, corresponding to the above defined classifications, either in terms of IMF sectors or geomagnetic activity; each ASCII file contains a grid of MLATxMLT values of the corresponding variable and the associated turbulence indices.

2. Turbulence indices during selected geomagnetic storms

In this section maps of the turbulence indices Hurst, β, and I (Intermittency), calculated from the Swarm A and B magnetic field external components (obtained after subtraction of the main field) parallel and perpendicular to the main field direction, and the electron density, for both high latitude Northern and Southern hemispheres are available during six geomagnetic storms occurred between April 2014 and March 2018. Differently from the climatological maps of the previous section, the two orthogonal components of the external magnetic field projected in the direction of the main field are combined in a single orthogonal component.

Each map file contains the evolution of the turbulence parameters from one day before the storm onset at ground and 4-5 days after the storm peak for a given hemisphere, and each single polar plot of the file shows the superposition of all the polar tracks of a single day for both Swarm A and Swarm B together. Therefore, for example, the file "INTENS_Storm1_North_Bo.pdf" will contain 28 maps, grouped in 7 rows of four maps each, displaying the High Latitude polar track variations (polar maps showing quasi-dipole magnetic latitudes > 50°, and magnetic local times from 0 to 24) of: 1) the variable, in this case Bo (the magnetic external component orthogonal to the main field direction), 2) the Hurst index related to Bo, 3) the β index related to Bo, 4) the I index related to Bo, all pertaining to Storm N. 1 (January 6th – 12th , 2015). Each row of images characterizes a day of evolution of the Storm (please refer to here for more details).

Each map plot is given in polar (θ,φ) quasi-dipole magnetic coordinates: 50° ≤ θ ≤ 90° in the Northern hemisphere, -90° ≤ θ ≤ -50° in the Southern hemisphere; 0 ≤ φ < 24 in units of Magnetic Local Time hours.

It is also possible to download the numerical values of the variables represented in each map, in form of compressed (.ZIP) files. Each ZIP file corresponds to a given variable (Bort, Bpar and Ne) for a given storm, and contains 6 or 7 ASCII files, one for each day considered. Each ASCII file contains a MLatxMLT grid of the given variable and its related turbulence parameters, calculated for all the Swarm A and B complete orbits of the given day; therefore, in the ASCII files, the two hemispheres are not separated as it has been done for the PDF maps, but the selection of the desired latitude sector is straightforward.

3. Entropy analysis for Swarm derived geomagnetic indices

In this section one can download the entropy plots (in .JPG format) of the Swarm-derived Dst-like and AE-like indices calculated from the Swarm A magnetic field components (obtained after subtraction of the main field), as well as of the Swarm A and B parallel and perpendicular to the main field direction components. Dst-like index refers to Magnetic Latitudes that lie below ±40° (mid-low latitudes – includes both hemispheres) and AE-like index refers to Magnetic Latitudes that lie above 50˚ or below 50˚ (high latitudes – includes both hemispheres).

Each figure corresponds to the results for a given index / component (Dst or AE / Total field, Bpar, Bper1, Bper2), a given geomagnetic storm event (March, June) or the entire year 2015. Therefore, for example, the file "INTENS_SwarmA_2015_Dst-like_Entropies.pdf" will contain 7 plots, grouped in one column, displaying the 2015 Dst-index time series, the Approximate Entropy (ApEn), Sample Entropy (SampEn), Fuzzy Entropy (FuzzyEn), Shannon Entropy, Tsallis Entropy and Fisher Information measure.

Entropy Analysis figures, according to Shannon, Renyi and Tsallis formalisms, contain 4 plots each, displaying (from top to bottom) the time series, Histogram Entropy computed in 100 bins, Block entropies (for both Lumping and Gliding methods) computed on binary symbolic series (median threshold), up to m=5. Entropy Analysis figures displaying Approximate, Sample and Fuzzy entropies are presented all in one figure. ApEn & SampEn computed using the Supremum Norm as a difference measure, with a parameter r=0.5*std (r=3.0*std for INTENS Bpar, Bper1 and Bper2 timeseries). FuzzyEn computed using Gaussian Membership Function.

It is also possibile to download, for each plot, the numerical values of the variables represented in the plot, in form of compressed (.ZIP) files. Each ZIP file contains a number of ASCII files (.dat), corresponding to the number of panels of the related plot; the names of the ASCII files also contain a number which characterize the panel (01,02,...,from top to bottom), and a shortened name of the variable represented in the panel. Exceptions and other details are described in the tables below.

This Section contains plots and data related to the Dst- and AE-like indices calculated as described above for the whole year 2015.
